Salvage Titled Vehicles *

If you are buying or have bought a vehicle with a salvage title
You need to carefully review the Massachusetts Salvage Title Regulations before you can drive or register the vehicle. The following links may help you get started, but the Mass. RMV makes the ultimate determinations of the steps you need to follow  :
  1. Definition of a salvage title, see this link:
       http://www.mass.gov/rmv/titles/8define.htm
  2. Before the vehicle with a salvage title can be registered or driven, it must first pass a salvage inspection -
For details, go to :  http://www.mass.gov/rmv/titles/11salinsp.htm
  3. After the vehicle has passed the Salvage inspection, you may obtain a Reconstructed or Recovered Theft Title.
A Salvage Repairable Theft will be branded Recovered Theft. All other Salvage Repairable brands will be branded Reconstructed.
For details, go to : http://www.mass.gov/rmv/titles/12theft.htm

To Obtain a title for a Total Loss Vehicle

An Owner Retained Title may be obtained, when an insurance company deems a vehicle to be a total loss and the owner keeps possession of the vehicle. The vehicle must have an active registration and is capable of being safely operated on a public way. Otherwise you will need to get a Salvage Title. Refer to the Mass RMV Web Site for the detailed procedures:
